Submitting Your First Artwork
ArtistsUpdated Apr 16, 2026
Submitting your work to a call on Crafted Call is straightforward. This guide walks you through the entire process, from finding a call to hitting that final submit button.
Find a Call and Start Your Submission
Go to Browse Calls and find a call you want to apply to
Click the call card to view full details
Click Submit Your Work (or similar button)
You'll be taken to a submission form
Tip: Before you start, gather everything you'll need: your artwork images, title, dimensions, medium, price (if applicable), and artist statement. This speeds up the process.
Step 1: Upload Your Artwork Images
Most calls require at least one image of your work. Follow the gallery's guidelines carefully.
Image tips:
Use high-quality, well-lit photos
Avoid filters, watermarks, or heavy edits unless the call requires them
Format: JPG, PNG, or PDF (check the call for specifics)
File size: Usually under 10 MB per image
Resolution: 72 DPI for screen, 300 DPI if the gallery will print
Click Upload Image or drag and drop your file
Crafted Call will display a preview
If needed, upload additional images (most calls allow 3–5 images per submission)
You can reorder images by dragging them. The first image is often what the jury sees first, so choose your strongest work.
Tip: If you have a portfolio elsewhere, some galleries allow you to pull images directly from your existing portfolio. Look for a Link From Portfolio option.
Step 2: Fill in Artwork Metadata
Now tell us about each piece:
Title
The official name of your work. Be specific and descriptive.
Medium
Select the primary medium (oil on canvas, ceramic, digital print, etc.). This should match the call's requirements.
Dimensions
Enter the height, width, and depth (if applicable). Remember your measurement preference (imperial or metric) is saved to your account.
Tip: For dimensional work, include depth. For flat pieces, just height and width is fine.
Price or Value
If the call asks for pricing, enter it here. This might be asking what your work is worth, or what you'd price it at if sold. Some calls require this for selection purposes.

Step 3: Write Your Artist Statement
Most galleries want to hear about your work in your own words. Your artist statement should explain:
What inspired this piece
The themes or ideas you're exploring
Your process or technique (if relevant)
Why this work matters to you
Length: Usually 100–300 words (check the call for specifics).
Tip: Keep it authentic and personal. Galleries want to understand your voice and perspective, not a generic artist bio.
Crafted Call's form shows you how many words you've written and lets you know if you're hitting the call's requirements.
Step 4: Handle Custom Fields
Some galleries ask for additional information beyond the basics. These custom fields might include:
Your preferred display method (wall mounted, pedestal, etc.)
Edition number (if the work is part of a series)
Whether the work is for sale
Availability or loan restrictions
Shipping/installation notes
Fill in any custom fields the call requires. Galleries use this information during jury selection and exhibition planning.
Step 5: Review Before Submitting
Before you submit, review everything:
Check your images – Make sure they're in the right order and show your work well
Verify artwork details – Title, medium, dimensions, and price are correct
Read your artist statement – No typos or awkward phrasing
Confirm custom fields – All required fields are completed
If you see an issue, click Edit to go back and fix it.
Step 6: Pay Submission Fee (if applicable)
Some calls are free, but many include an entry fee ($15–$75 is typical). When you're ready to submit:
Review the submission fee
Click Proceed to Payment
Enter your payment information (Crafted Call uses secure payment processing)
Confirm the payment
Your submission is complete once the payment is processed.
Submit or Save as Draft
You have two options:
Submit Now: Your submission is sent to the gallery immediately. You can't edit it after submission.
Save as Draft: Save your submission and come back to finish it later. Drafts are saved automatically as you work, so you won't lose any changes.
Tip: Save as a draft if you're still gathering images or want to sleep on your artist statement. You can return anytime before the deadline to review and submit.
After You Submit
Once submitted, you'll see a confirmation message with:
Your submission number (keep this for your records)
The gallery's contact information
Expected notification date
You can view your submission from your Dashboard anytime. As the gallery reviews submissions and makes decisions, your submission status will update. (Learn more in Understanding Submission Statuses.)
Autosave Feature
Crafted Call automatically saves your progress as you fill out the submission form. If your browser crashes or connection drops, your work is safe. Just come back and your form will be exactly where you left it.
Portfolio Integration
If you manage your portfolio elsewhere (your own website, Instagram, etc.), some galleries allow you to link to your work directly instead of uploading files. Look for a Portfolio Link option on the submission form.
