Eric A. Smith
Eric Smith is an emerging fine-art photographer from Newburyport, Mass. He is also a left-brained engineer who has spent about 30 years wandering around Massachusetts’ Northshore and other parts of the globe attempting to use both sides of his brain to crop the world through a camera lens.
Artist Statement
Eric started his photographic career documenting his travels using film-based cameras. His interests expanded to include working in the darkroom to process black and white images according to his taste and vision. Today, he has fully embraced the added creativity made possible by today’s digital imaging tools. And when he’s not traveling and photographing, he can be found working in a “dim room” to print images using alternative processes such as cyanotype, Kallitype, and platinotype. Eric’s eye (and brain) is drawn to the beauty of natural landscapes and the geometry of human-designed objects such as buildings, planes, trains, and automobiles. He is particularly interested in capturing images that aren’t seen readily by the human eye. For example, images made with long exposures at night, double exposures, ICM, and exposures using infrared light. Eric looks for opportunities to use color, contrast, textures, focus, and brightness to lead the viewer’s eye into and around the images he creates.
