N.R. Bartel
N.R. Bartel is a self-taught oil painter based in New England, working through the human condition through high contrast works of abstraction and portraiture. Her work is anchored by identity, fear, discovery, and inner turmoil, all of which she has championed for the better half of 20 years. Her style honors the past with progressive sensibility, channeling the wisdom of the old masters through time-honored techniques while utilizing modern mediums and pigments as well as modern subjects.
Artist Statement
I feel the expression of emotions through visual means is inherently esoteric, yet it can be deeply understood by all. That both fascinates me and compels me. My art is, at its core, an attempt to master my ego, lest my ego masters me. In the process of creating, I am not quite wondering or worrying about you understanding and absorbing the colors and textures before you. I’m worried about you understanding and absorbing me.
